Seven rule sets, all fully playable
Switch at any time. Each has its own coaching and references, and the engine never lets you make an illegal move — so you learn the real rules by playing:
- Simplified (Teaching) — a gentle on-ramp for brand-new players.

Tune the AI opponents from Basic to Moderate to Very Good to “Wizard,” with optional per-seat difficulty and styles. Two board views — an overhead bird’s-eye and a 3-D perspective table — both with pinch-to-zoom.
The coach & on-device AI
A live coaching panel sits above your tiles, with Hide/Show and a “Why?” deep-dive that explains the trade-offs in plain language. The coach reads the whole board, ranks the top plays, and teaches rather than just telling. Post-game analysis is paraphrased every time — never a form letter.
Where your device supports it, Apple’s on-device intelligence powers a deeper narration of the reasoning and a grounded Ask the Coach — a natural-language answer drawn from the app’s own knowledge (lessons, glossary, rules, scoring), fully offline, with a graceful fallback when on-device AI isn’t available.
The analysis lab
Chess players have had analysis boards for decades; mahjong finally has one.
- A decision-quality score on every discard, plus an optional confidence read (best / good / risky).
- A per-turn timeline and mistake heat map that pinpoint the handful of decisions that actually cost you, and an efficiency radar across eight dimensions.
- Replay, rewind & fork any game move by move — change one discard and play it forward to compare.
- A Four-Seat Challenge that replays one deal from all four seats, so you can ask “what should East have done?” It grades your decision, not your luck.
Learn & knowledge
A structured curriculum with a lesson reader and reading tracking; a Guided First Game; “Meet the Tiles”; quizzes and a tile-ID speed quiz; a free-form Score Calculator that explains any hand; per-rule-set references and a side-by-side rule-set comparison; and a bibliography of the sources behind it all. Plus 13 skill drills — efficiency, defense, Charleston, calling, wait-reading, push/fold, yaku spotting, and more.
Progress, like a fitness ring
A Master Score out of 10,000 — world-class and deliberately hard to reach — built from Knowledge, Training, Gameplay, and Real-World play, with decay so consistency matters. Four daily rings that scale up as you improve and close like Apple’s, a Today roadmap, Focus Areas that rank your weakest spots, a full progress dashboard with charts and history, streaks, a strength-of-schedule-aware leaderboard, and a Mahjong Journal for logging real-world games.
Share a deal with anyone (MJPF)
Share a deal, a challenge, or a view-only replay as a compact code — and as a QR code — with no server and no account. Import a shared code to play the identical deal. It’s built on the Mahjong Portable Format, an open, published specification, so other apps can implement it too — with byte-for-byte fidelity proven on every change.
The wider mahjong world
All in-app and optional: Find Games (clubs, leagues, and tournaments by region), a searchable Community directory, a live News & Events feed, and Podcasts — a built-in player for the dedicated mahjong shows with a directory-wide episode search, plus a “What Others Are Saying” page with source-labeled analyses.
Accessibility & settings
Automatic light/dark, accent colors, board styles and table mats, colorblind-friendly tiles, three reading text sizes plus tile sizing, increased contrast, and VoiceOver support throughout. Recorded sound effects with a separate ambient-parlour toggle, haptics, and optional local reminders (no push server). Every one of the app’s user-facing screens is reachable and searchable — enforced by build gates, so nothing is orphaned.
What it deliberately isn’t
Some of the best features are the ones that aren’t there — by design:
- Not online, not multiplayer — and that’s the point. Single-player vs. AI, fully offline. No servers to run, nothing to breach, and it works on a plane. Sharing a deal happens peer-to-peer by QR or code.
- No accounts, no login. Your progress is yours, on your device, with optional private iCloud backup.
- No ads. No gacha. No pay-to-win. One honest subscription — the app never sells your attention.
- No analytics, no tracking, no third-party SDKs. The only network calls are read-only public feeds and diagnostics you tap to send.
